Reading conferences
As a teacher, it is important to check in with your students individually on their reading progress. You can do this by holding reading conferences. At this conference you can document the books that they are reading, their interests, and if they finished the books. If a student quits a book before finishing it, ask why. These conversations can help steer students to read books that will improve their reading skills. But remember to not discourage a student from reading a book that may be too hard for them. This is how some students can improve their literacy skills
An ongoing activity that I want to include in my classroom is an activity called read around the world.
I will post a large world map in my classroom.
I will tell my students at the start of the school year that I challenge them to read books about as many countries as possible throughout the school year.
Every time a student reads a book from a particular country I will color that country in on the map.
The goal at the end of the year is to make our map as colorful as we can.
