During the Fall 2023 semester for math, my partner (Mikaela Wilson) and I created four lesson plans with a unit focusing on addition and subtraction using two two-digit numbers. To start off the unit, we read the story Blast Off! How Mary Sherman Morgan Fueled America Into Space by Suzanne Slade. The read aloud helped develop the central theme of the unit, space! Students took a pre-assessment prior to the start of the lessons. Each lesson was taught with a new concept of addition and subtraction with space and how specifically they could use it at NASA. At the end of the unit, a post-assessment was administered to the students.
Please Note: This unit plan was created prior to meeting the students of the class, the unit plan quickly shifted after analyzing the data of the students.
Vocabulary:
Number Families (also known as fact families): Four different facts using the same three numbers to create related facts.
Related Facts: Mathematical statements that share the same numbers but use different operations.
Operation: A mathematical process.
Addition: A math operation in which the sum of two or more numbers is calculated.
Subtraction: Taking one number away from another.
Commutative Property: You can add numbers in any order and the answer will be the same.
Inverse: Opposite (the opposite of addition is subtraction and the opposite of subtraction is addition).
Place Value: The value represented by a digit in a number on the basis of its position in a number.
Decomposing: regrouping, borrowing. In column subtraction, when the bottom digit is greater than the top digit, a 10 is traded or borrowed from the top digit in the next column left and that digit is marked down by one.
Composing: In column addition, when the ones add up to more than ten, trading out ten ones for a ten.
MA State Framework: 2.NBT.B.5 . Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Unit Learning Outcome: Students will be able to independently add and subtract using only two digit numbers.
