This semester I have had the opportunity to explore different interdisciplinary teaching through a STEM read aloud to kick off the math unit and a small math mini lesson that was fused into the science unit about plants. Through this opportuntiy it has become quite clear that all the subjects are intertwined and math is not just all about numbers.
STEM Read Aloud
This is the lesson plan that was created for the STEM read aloud to kickoff the math unit. The book read was Blast Off! How Mary Sherman Morgan Fueled America Into Space by Suzanne Slade. The book talked abotu Mary Sherman Morgan who created fuel for rockets at NASA. With this topic, students were able to learn more about space, rockets, and NASA. Additionally, understanding that math plays a key role in science specifically in the creation of rocket fuel.
Integrated Unit
This is the lesson plan that was created for the elaborate portion of our science unit. In this elaborate portion, students are taught how to measure. They have the opportunity to practice measuring with quick activities in their plant journals and then finally measuring their own grass which they grew!
