While working in sports photography and student journalism, I have learned the all-encompassing terms of credibility, honesty, accountability, and responsibility. As editor of our student sports staff, it is important to report with tact to ensure our publication's credibility. Often young - and experienced - journalists want to air complaints and grips on the website. This can be dangerous and even criminal.
We learned tact and honesty. I often have to conference with young writers about this angle. On the other hand, sometimes honesty is necessary and must be reported with sensitivity and poise. Being a sports photographer and social media manager, I have learned that capturing a photo of a person and publishing it, can have a profound effect on that person's feelings and even reputation.
I had to learn the copyright laws. We must learn about these as journalism is not a place to 'cut corners'. With written AI, cutting and pasting, and other 'easier/quicker' methods to report and publish, it is my job as editor to make sure submitted stories are genuine and accurate. It is important to understand biases, and how to be aware, and navigate those biases on the way to the publishing step. I have had some of my most fruitful editing conferences with my members about these ideas.
