I volunteered as a Block Party Mentor at the Andover Youth Center for the whole 2022–2023 academic year. Every Thursday between 3:30 and 4:30 pm, my friends and I taught middle school students the fundamentals of filmmaking. Additionally, we made short films with them that cover everything from an alien invasion of Earth to news broadcasts. In addition to working with the children, we managed their AYC social media account for the year, creating videos of the events that took place there. Teaching these kids a way to express themselves creatively truly showed me the collaborative power of filmmaking and how it can influence the next generation.
Starting sophomore year, I would volunteer time to film events that happened in Andover High School's auditorium, the Collins Center. I recorded plays and music recitals that would stream live on the local Andover TV stations. This job made me feel more connected to my community because I was documenting these events for the people involved in them to watch later. I am proud that my work filming school events helped create a permanent record of the shows for members of the community and the contributors to the productions.
