Environmental Science
In sophomore year I opted to fulfill a science credit with environmental Science, a half-year, mixed grade course. During this class, we spent a lot of time discussing the impacts of human actions on the world around us, from a local and also global scale. My favorite part of this class was that after having these discussions in class, we got to go outside to the AVIS trail behind the highschool and see the ecosystem that we are directly impacting everyday. For sustainable development goals, I would connect this course to Life on Land (goal #15) and Climate Action (goal #13).
The Modern World
For my history class this particular year, I took Modern World. This covered a wide variety of historical events that had impacts around the globe. The topics that most stood out to me were the Industrial Revolution and concepts like different types of government. This class helped me to better understand the way our country operates on a political level. Overall I would connect what I learned in this course to Gender Equality (Goal #5), and Economic Growth (Goal #8).
Spanish III
For my world language requirement this school year, I took Spanish III. While the main focus was grammar and speaking practices, we also spent some time learning about cultural and political differences between the US and Spanish-speaking countries. I would connect this class to Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (Goal #16), and Partnerships (Goal #17).
Junior Year
Hispanic Language and Culture
Junior year I selected Hispanic Language and Culture as my language credit. I found it was similar to Spanish III, just more advanced. For this reason, I would continue to connect to Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (Goal #16), and Partnerships (Goal #17).
AP US History
Junior year I made the decision to take APUSH. This was one of the first AP classes I took, and while it was challenging in many aspects, I also took away a lot of studying and presenting skills. During this class, we covered pretty much the entire scope of US history, including the roots of more present-day issues such as gender inequality and redlining. I would connect APUSH to Economic growth (Goal #8), and Gender Equality (Goal #5).
AP English Language & Composition
The second AP class I took during this year was AP Lang. The main focus of this class was writing skills for different segments of the final AP test, but we also worked with a variety of texts that explored concepts like the American dream. I would connect the things I learned during this course to Quality Education (Goal #4), and Peace, Justice, and strong institutions (Goal #16).
Senior Year
Latin American Studies for Social Justice
For senior year Spanish I selected a course that was a little bit less grammatically focused and more centered around geographic features of Latin American countries, as well as history and cultural customs. I have really enjoyed this course so far, in particular units where we discussed athletic and dance trends in different countries within the Latin American community. I would connect this course to Quality Education (Goal #4), as well as Zero Hunger (Goal #2), as those are two topics we are specifically discussing in class.
Senior Capstone
Senior Capstone has quickly become one of my favorite courses as it has given me the opportunity to explore topics of my own interest. As I have chosen a medical-related topic for my final caps talk, I have found a majority of my research in that field relating to gender differences in athletic injuries. For this reason, I would connect Senior Capstone to Good Health and Well-Being (Goal #3), and Gender Equality (Goal #5).
AP Psychology
AP Psychology was one of the courses I selected for my senior year courseload because I was interested in learning about the mental component of many medical ailments I had learned about in other science classes. I have found this course really interesting and I would connect it to Good Health and Well-Being (Goal #3).
