I could not complete any community service as this was during the pandemic and there was no opportunity to give back to my community
I have a strong belief in saving habitats and wildlife. During this activity, I cleaned up trash in a nature preserve and cleared huge pieces of wood, as well as cutting down flammable trees to avoid the causes of wildfires. This activity was important to me as I want to work to make our environments healthier and safer for animals.
Something I learned during this activity was that through teamwork and communication a lot can be achieved. Additionally, this was shown as we cleared out all the trash in wood in just 3 hours due to our hard work. I felt very content after this activity and I plan on working with, I Love a Clean San Diego, again.
During this activity I helped organize the Poway Winter Festival and I participated in the ice skating activity. During this, I handed out and cleaned ice skates from the families who visited the festival. I enjoyed this activity very much because it allowed me to socialize and meet new people within my group as well as the incoming families.
During this activity, I learned how to collaborate and talk to people I have never met before in order to work together complete our goals. I also believe I obtained new leadership skills as I came up with new strategies to make the ice skating event run more smoothly for everyone working the event. In all, I enjoyed meeting new people and learning to effectively communicate with others.
In order to support the children attending the Rady's Children's Hospital over the Holidays. AVID organized an opportunity for students to spread some Holiday Cheer by making colorful and joyous Christmas cards for the children in Rady's Hosptial. This event impacted me as it reminded me that we should always support and recognize others in our communities.
I am glad I participated in this event as I was able to help make the holidays a little easier for families and loved ones being cared for at Rady's Children's Hospital. During this event I learned that taking time to make things for others can be more impactful than it seems.
For this activity, I motivated my classmates to help pick up trash around the school for 30min. It may not seem like much but it was a huge help to the janitors and keeping Westview clean. This activity was important to me because I care deeply about the environment. I also understand that the amount of trash littered around our campus is disrespectful to our staff and I believe they deserve more recognition.
I learned a lot from this community service as it helped me realize how being careless of our trash can really affect the environment. I feel that in this community service I learned how to motivate my classmates to help participate in the event and I ensured they got their credit for completing the service.
During this activity, I helped out the Westview swim team by timing the swimmers times against Mt. Carmel High School. I was responsible for timing and writing down the times of each team/person and keeping track of papers for each person.
During this event, I worked on my listening and communication skills as I had to follow a strict way of timing the swimmers. Overall, I enjoyed this event as I met new people and learned to allow others to help me when I was in doubt.
During this event, I participated in welcoming and checking in people into Modern Luxury's Health and Wellness event at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar Hotel. I handed out flyers, asked the guests for their names, and gave them directions for where to find our event. For this role I needed active listening and communication skills to succeed in properly welcoming guests.
After this event, I felt I had greatly improved in my speaking and confidence when talking to others. I also benefited from this event as I was able to network and meet people with good connections that might be useful to me later on.
On October 28th, 2022, I volunteered for Sundance Elementary School to help set up Halloween activities for the elementary school kids, as they were having a Halloween festival. I spent 3 hours cleaning up the auditorium, setting up games around the school, and being in charge of one of the games. I was in charge of a bean bag toss where I taught the kids how to play and gave them prizes if they did well.
Through this experience, I learned that effective communication is key to organizing big events like this one. Without communicating properly, people were easily distracted, confused, and less productive. This community service taught me the best ways to communicate with others in order to effectively work together, especially when we have the same goal in mind.
During my junior year, I joined the Leukemia Lymphmoa Society (LLS). LLS is an organization where groups of students from across the country compete to raise the most money to donate to finding a cure to cancer. This year, I dedicated myself to writing many letters and emails to promote the fundraiser and gain donations. I also worked to help organize a silent auction to raise money. In this, I asked 10+ companies if they would donate and worked on advertising those donations to encourage people to attend. In addition, I also attended monthly team meetings. In the picture shown, I am with my other team members, decorating a Sprouts grocery store, because they agreed to match donations from customers!
