This was my first soccer season at Westview during the COVID-19 pandemic and online learning.
I am glad that I pushed myself to try out for the Westview JV Girls soccer team. It allowed me to push myself out of my comfort zone and meet new people which was difficult during online learning. I had the opportunity to meet some really cool people who encouraged me to push myself. Being on the team also helped me improve in my soccer skills and taught me how to accept failure as a learning experience and not a setback.
This year I dedicated myself to the AVID Executive team. I was involved in the connectivity committee where I was able to show my leadership and social skills through collaborating with my exec team and organize AVID group bonding activities. We organized spirit weeks, group team buildings, and more. As class representative for my sophomore class, I also prepared information to be announced to the class and kept my class aware of current events as well as activities to participate in or show spirit for.
Overall, I believe that this year was extremely successful. Our most successful events were our homecoming spirit week and our Holiday spirit week . Also, I feel that I grew in my public speaking and leadership skills tremendously. I learned how to clearly communicate to my exec team and my class, of activities that we personally organized. However, as I do plan on running for AVID exec president for my junior year, I plan on improving the communication within the AVID exec group and doing a better job in spreading events to the AVID classes to ensure more participation from all grade levels.
During my sophomore year, I was apart of the Westview High School ASL club. I am deaf in my right ear and I am fluent in American Sign Language as it is how I communicate with my deaf grandparents. When I noticed the club was struggling to teach its members sign language, I took the initiative to do something about it. With my grandparents being in town and having teaching experience (my grandpa used to teach ASL at UC Berkeley), I arranged to have them come and teach the club American sign language. I worked with the exec members to get an ASL translator and helped my grandparents decide what to teach the students. Overall, the meeting was a huge success and many of the club members got the opportunity to learn sign language! In the picture shown, I am walking my grandparents to the school's gym where the meeting was held.
This year I joined the Westview JV Cross Country team during the fall season. We typically have practice every day and train for upcoming meets on Saturdays. I have built good relationships and close connections with my team and enjoy seeing them everyday.
Trying out for a new sport my junior year pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me maintain a healthy lifestyle and create new habits. I feel that being in cross country has made me a more reliable and independent person as it takes self-discipline to show up everyday and train. I have also learned that I love to meet and work with new people.
This year I joined the Westview JV Track team during the spring season. We have practice every day to train for our weekly meets on Thursdays. For my events, I typically run the 100, 200, and 400 meter events. I am focused on improving my times and obtaining new PRs (personal records) at every one of our meets.
I finished my first track season strong with 3 PRs throughout the season and I attended the end of the year Track Banquet. Although I was set back by an injury, I pushed through and made improvements to my form which allowed me to become a stronger and faster runner. I am excited to continue with track next year and hope to dedicate more time and effort to my team.
This year I participated in a school event called Unity Day. Unity day is where upperclassman work to create a safe place for the sophomore class to talk about their feelings and give them a sense of responsibility over their own actions. I find Unity Day a very important and impactful event as it changed my own perspective of the way I act. By volunteering to be apart of this activity, I hope to spread awareness and kindness to others. I definitely plan on volunteering for this activity again next year as I think it is so valuable.
I am the current Co-President of the Westview Highschool book club. In my position, I organize our meetings, plan fundraisers, and ensure that all book club members have a voice when concerning their opinions on the books we read. I am also in charge of specific duties such as creating our executive board positions and advertising the club during club rush.
I am also the Current Co-President of the Westview Highschool AVID Executive team. My responsibilities include leading the weekly Monday meetings, keeping my committees on task, and helping out with events. I am very passionate about being an AVID student and therefore I love taking on this responsibility. It is important to me that I strive to improve the connectivity within the AVID family and raise enough money to ensure that all AVID student have an equal opportunity to participate in educational field trips.
