For example, you start to notice that elements in the same group (vertical columns) have similar properties, like how the alkali metals in Group 1 are all very reactive.
In chemistry class, my teacher demonstrated how to use the periodic table to determine electron configurations, predict chemical bonding, and even balance chemical equations. It becomes less about memorization and more about understanding patterns. To make this classic bread, begin by whisking the flour, salt, and instant yeast together in a large bowl, then pour in the water—starting with 300g for a firmer dough or up to 350g for a wetter, more open crumb—and mix until a shaggy dough forms. Next, turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8 to 10 minutes until it becomes smooth, elastic, and passes the windowpane test. Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 to 2 hours, or until it has doubled in size. After this first rise, gently punch down the dough to release the air, shape it into your desired loaf or boule, and place it on a baking sheet or in a loaf pan for a second rise of about 45 to 60 minutes. Finally, score the top of the loaf with a sharp knife and bake it in an oven preheated to 220°C (425°F) for 30 to 35 minutes until the crust is a deep golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
