6) Answer the following questions:

a) Summarize what you read

On October 7, 2023, the Islamist group, Hamas, launched an attack on southern Israel, hundreds being killed or taken hostage. The Israeli government and Hamas have since been a conflict, both launching attacks on each other. The United Nations has tried to send aid to the inhabitants of Palestine, but it has been hijacked and used by the Hamas.

b) Explain in your own words what you know about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict (feel free to bring in additional information you didn't get in this story if you have it).

Israel first launched an attack on Palestine, in hopes of removing Hamas from power. The Hamas launched an attack on Israel in response. This violence has been continuous, and deadly, with thousands being injured, killed, or taken hostage.

c) Explain what is happening in Gaza to the civilians living there, based on what you read from the article.

The civilians of Gaza have been severely displaced from their homes, and have been engulfed by a public health catastrophe, with hospitals becoming increasingly full.

d) When two opposing groups go to war, and send in their troops (whether they are officially trained military members or loose groups of men/women fighting together or something in between), how can we best serve those in the middle who have nothing to do with the war itself (the civilians)?

I believe that the way we can best serve those caught in the crossfire is by helping them find safe environments and aid, but not outwardly taking part in the war.

e) What should the US do in response to this war, in your opinion?

I think that the US should help the people displaced by this war, but not outwardly take place in the violence. I think this because the United States isn't currently in its best state, finally getting out of Afghanistan and already aiding Ukraine. The United States should put a main priority on its state before saving other countries.

f) Compare your thoughts on this war, versus the war in the Ukraine.

This Israel-Palestine war is quite different from the Ukraine-Russia war. Although it has its obvious similarities, the Israel-Palestine war is much harder to take a side on. When looking at Russia and Ukraine, one can take a somewhat common stance, defending Ukraine. In this more recent war, one has to decide what one wants to defend: the struggling citizens of Gaza, or the Israeli government for trying to abolish the Hamas.
