Or Plastic Antweights

Impulse
Plastic antweights or Plants, are an excellent way for us to introduce new members to combat robotics, or robotics in general.
One of the biggest challenges with a club like us is not having things for people to do. We don't have unlimited resources, and can only have so many people on each project. However, when someone new is interested in the club and they have no prior experience in robotics, placing them on a project and getting them up to speed fast would be great for member retention.
The name "Plastic Antweight" can be broken down into it's two main components "Plastic", meaning no metal, completely 3d printed materials, and "Antweight", or the 1lb weight class. Plants are different than full combat robots by their material restrictions. Plants can only be 3d printed in PLA, ABS or PETG. This helps keep Plants cheap and accessible to new comers. Plants are easy to iterate on since 3d printing allows rapid prototyping. If you want to know more, refer to the latest SPARC ruleset. (Or join our Discord)
CRUTD Plant Battlebox
Plants are a program we have just started implementing here at Comet Robotics. All new members go through a series of workshops, build nights and design reviews all for one reason- to build their very first battlebot. At our kickoff meeting each semester, we welcome many prospective members to the club. At this meeting we go over the Plant program. At the end of the semester, we hold a club wide competition where every completed Plant enters a bracket to compete against all the other Plants people have been working on that semester. Once a member has 'graduated' from Plants, they can be picked up by team leads for their project.
The Plant workshops we host are designed to bring many people up to speed on the fundamentals of robot combat, but are almost always open to all students at UTD, whether they are a member or not. We cover a variety of different topics such as Solidworks, Combat Robot Types, Electrical and many more. Plant workshops are supplemented by build nights where we give one on one mentoring and guidance to new members. A design review before any 3d printing happens keeps the amount of wasted filament and 'dumb mistakes' low.
