This page is all about WW2 and WW1 and events from this time.
Both world wars began slowly, with a country invading another. Many people died and because of this many of our elderly have suffered PTSD. Children were also affected as it was a traumatising event in their lives. In WW2, Many children were evacuated to the country-side which meant having to leave their families behind.
World War One stared on 28 july 1914 because of the assassination of austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand. They fought on land, in planes and sea because of germany wanted to gain more power. It lasted 4 years ending in 1918, the allies where mainly Franch, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, ans US, while the Axis were mainly Germany, Austira-Hungary, and Turkey.
In 1918, Germany was in a strong position to win, however the end of this war happened because of a few small changes:
Britain and France came to together to form a counterattack on Germany.
The German Navy went on strike.
As of 1917 the United States has joined to fight to support the allies.
All of these things led to Germany backing down and signing an aggreement of peace.
World War 2 started on the 1 of september 1939 and ended on the 2 of september 1945. Adolf Hitler began WW2 when he ordered an invasion of Poland. Great Britan were not happy and stepped in to help Poland.
In World War 2, Great Britan had many allies including Soviet Union, USA, France, Belgium, Greece and many others. While the Axis again was Germany, Italy and Japan.
It ended when the Germans were losing, so they had to sign a peace treaty to not fight any more.
Hull was a target for the german luftwaffe because it was more east than other towns and cities. The worst of the bombing happened on 7th/8th May 1941. As a result of they heavy bombing we suffered, the Savoy Cinema, which is now Boyes on Holderness road, was called 'river of blood' as many people died or were severly injured here.
Hull was very smart in preparing to hide our city from German bombers, to do this;
The people used blackout curtains to stop any light shining out their houses.
They took all of the signs down off the streets because everyone knows there way around Hull.
They put a white line next to the edge of the road so at night we know where is the road is.
Most importantly, we made a fake dock. We used 45 containers filled with water and put lights on the top to look like our boats.
The king and queen made many visit's to areas that had been bombed during the blitz, as well as serving personnel to munition factories,RAF bases and royal navel ships.
The king survived in Buckingham Palace after 9 bombs, him and his wife visted extremely bombed ereas in the eastern end of London and a few other parts near there.
When Queen Elizabeth II was just 17, she began learning how to be a mecanic to support the war effort, fixing cars, trucks, ambulances etc.
