Many protesting suffragette were arrested for breaking the law and sometimes went on a hunger strike (stopped eating) in prison to stop them from becoming ill they were sometimes forced to eat by prison staff. suffragette fought long to vote, they sometimes destroyed other peoples propertey. The leader of them was a woman named Emmeline Pankhurst she was one of the most famous suffragettes, she was also one of the FIRST suffragettes. The suffragettes started a protest for the rights of women to vote. The protest started in 1858 and ended in 1928
Women only had some right and there job was to clean the house.

Born in Southeast London On 11th October 1872. In 1906, she joined the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), founded by Emmeline Pankhurst.
Three years later she gave up her job as a teacher and went to work full-time for the suffragette movement. She was arrested many times for causing public disturbances and burning post boxes. She spent a number of short periods in jail.
Thousands of people including King George V and Queen Mary, attended the popular racing event. The King even had a horse in the race, called Anmer.
As the horses rounded the third turn, Emily pushed through the crowds and under the protective rail. She stood in front of Anmar, holding the suffragette flag, and was trampled by the horse. Emily was rushed into hospital but had received fatal internal injuries and died four days later
People were upset by what had happend and began to pull their support from the cause and the media only focused on the jockey and the horse.
Meanwhile the First World War had broken out and much of this was forgotton.
In 1928 women in England, wales and Scotland where allowed to vote.
