Welcome to our site, featuring poems, short stories and creative nonfiction pieces written by the students in St Peter High School's Creative Writing class. This amazing group of gifted young people in grades 9-12 have worked hard this semester. This is a small sample of their work, selected by the authors. Enjoy! Paulette Topel, English Teacher

This year, students were so lucky to work with local author Pat Ryan during a two day workshop. Ryan hooked them right away with a magic trick and taught them about magical realism. After reading one of Ryan's stories from The Baseball Diet Book, students wrote their own magical realism stories. One of the exercises Ryan led the students through was writing a 300 word piece without using the letter 'E', which was very challenging. Junior Matthew Timmerman really enjoyed the experience saying, "That was so fun! It gave me an opportunity to think more deeply about the words I was using and allowed me think more poetically and used a more 'fleshed-out' vocabulary." Overall, the whole class benefitted from Ryan's talent, experience, and humor! We are so appreciative that he shared his time!
Allen Eskens is another amazing local writer who generously donated his time to talk to the students! Before the visit, students read different books in a literature circle format, such as The Life We Bury, The Stolen Hours, The Heavens May Fall, and Nothing More Dangerous. Eskens shared his high school experience and what eventually led to his writing career. The students asked many questions about the craft of writing and the business of publishing. Many staff expressed jealousy that they were not invited to the event. Clearly, Eskens has many fans in St. Peter! We are all excited to read his next novel, The Quiet Librarian, coming out this February.
