Power of the Pen

On Monday, I assigned the "Magic Potion" story in Classroom. Because we are also working on essays, I decided to give you three class periods to complete this story, so it is not due until the end of the day on next Monday, April 27.

Technology

Today's topic is how images are represented digitally. Vocabulary:

  • PIXEL (picture element): the smallest dot of an image

  • Each element needs to be stored using BINARY data.

  • This video shows a very simple image that is "transmitted" by kids using an ALGORITHM, or set of rules. The Algorithm is number of white boxes, then black, then white and continue alternating until none are left.

  • By using the algorithm, the size of the file is COMPRESSED so it is smaller, needs less storage, and transfers faster when it is sent over the Internet or over networks.

Activities:

  1. First Watch the youtube video. If you need more explanation, look at the original video from Computer Science Unplugged.

  2. Next, You will use the Google Sheets attached in "April 24 Image Representation" in Google Classroom to do the work. The video shows how to resize the columns so they are 25 wide. The video tells you how to use the algorithm. (blank, dark, blank, dark etc) Then, use the fill paint with a dark color to fill in the correct cells using the numbers on the worksheet. When you are done, there will be a recognizable image. The number on the left is always blank, then the next is dark, then blank, and alternates. If there are left over cells, then they are blank. If there are no blank cells when you start a row, it is 0. The first number on the left always represents the number of blank.

  3. When you are done with this on, do the exercise backwards and create your own. First, color in the dark cells to make a design, initials, or a favorite player's number. Then figure out the algorithm on the side. Like above, count how many blank cells start. Then alternate to dark, light, etc. Turn in when done.

Code-It

  1. Go Khan Academy to do 25 minutes in "Introduction to JS - Drawing Animation assignment in Khan Academy."

  2. If you don't understand Khan Academy, view and finish the video. Please go back to Google Classroom "April 24 Khan Academy Progress".

  3. If you have time or you finished "Intro to JS", you can go back to your Scratch/Tinkercad/Minemator project.
