PROMPT #1 Room Observational Drawing/Painting

For your Prompt #1 I want you to select a room in your house and create a detailed, observational drawing OR painting of exactly what you see. Try to use value (shading, hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, scribbling) and consider space (perspective) in which to show the viewer of the room. Try your bedroom, living room, dining room, bathroom, siblings room, basement, garage space, or even outside space like your yard or house/apartment---get creative. Remember to work with your eyes and hands to communicate and draw exactly what you see---not what you think you see. Take your time, this can be done using any media or paper of your choice.*. (check out examples below)

PROMPT #2. Surface Test

For prompt #2 I want you to check out the youtube video by The Art Assignment----in this video you meet artist Kim Beck who is famous for creating texture "rubbings" that translate into surface drawings. Beck considers a rubbing to be a kind of alternative snapshot. Rather than capturing a place the way a photograph does--though light and time--a rubbing creates a record of a place through texture and touch. Answer questions in a google doc and create drawing based on steps below:

Create a "Suface Test" Rubbing;

1. Using a large piece of paper and crayon find a ground that you respond to (can be inside/outside) and make a rubbing by placing the paper on the ground and dragging the crayon slowly and repeatedly over.

2. When finished, take a photo of the rubbing in the place it was made (example below) and submit into google classroom*

Be sure to respond to questions in google classroom VIA a google doc.

Prompt #3 Vacation Ink Drawing

For prompt #3 I want you to think about the word Vacation. What comes to mind first? Is it a place you've been? A place you've always wanted to go but haven't? Is it even actual place you can travel too or completely made up to only you? Use any type of paper and something to ink with (pen, sharpie, drawing pen) create a drawing depicting your idea of vacation. No color is needed BUT please feel free to add some if your drawing requires it!

Hey Everyone,

Todays prompt I want you to take a look around your house or use google and find images of house plants to observe. Notice the shape, texture, line, color, and the style of the pot that houses the plant. On ONE piece of paper, following each of the steps, you will create 4 fun plant drawings using simple materials. This assignment is due Sunday April 19th.

STEP ONE; On a piece of paper draw/paint 4 squares using color (no coloring materials? Try using make up for color, create different grey values using just your pencil, have post it notes? cut 4 small squares on glue/tape them down---get creative).

STEP TWO; Using a pen (black OR blue) or drawing pen outline the rectangle you've created and make a fun design using pattern and line to create the pot that will house your plant. From there either by drawing from observation or using images from your google search draw 4 different plants for each pot.

STEP THREE; If you have coloring materials available finish your design and shade in plants with different values of green color to make your final designs pop! against the black/blue outline.

4 plants are required but please feel free to make a whole sheets worth of plants if you'd like!

Be sure to photograph final designs and upload into google classroom by Sunday, April 19th.

I liked the idea of having a bicycle wheel in my studio. I enjoyed looking at it, just as I enjoyed looking at the flames dancing in a fireplace. It was like having a fireplace in my studio.”

Hey Everyone,

Todays prompt we are going to focus on using a classic art technique and create found object drawings. What's a found object you ask? A Found Object "is a natural or man-made object, or fragment of an object, that is found (or sometimes bought) by an artist and kept because of some intrinsic interest the artist sees in it" (https://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/f/found-object). Many artists have used this technique in this work such as Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dali, and Damien Hurst (works featured below).

Your prompt for today, I want you to come up with a drawing (with or without color) that includes one found object. This drawing can be big or small and I suggest using a black thin sharpie or black pen to outline drawing when complete to POP with the object you chose to include. Do NOT copy the drawings in this post---these are here to help you generate ideas, please make sure work is always your own. Only one drawing is required but if you make more than one please upload pictures of all work. Please photograph and upload to google classroom by end of day TODAY, Monday April 13th. Have fun and any questions, always email.

Hey Everyone,

I found this great artist to check out for todays inspired prompt from thisiscolossal.com. Hoàng Hoàng is a graphic designer and illustrator based in Vietnam. His recent artwork consists of illustrations that merge science and art in which he creates insects shown in their natural habitats and replicating those pinned in display cases for preservation.

His artwork focuses on the use of geometric shapes that create the insect body, use of lines on flowers/grass, and pastel like colors that fill the background. For your prompt today I want you to think of an insect and create a painting or drawing in the style of Hoàng Hoàng's work. Insect should consist of geometric shapes, a plant like feature interacting with insect, and a light color (if available) of your choice for the background. Make sure to photograph completed artwork and turn in by end of day/midnight Wednesday April 8th* I attached a list of insect and geometric shapes to help---any questions always feel free to email.

Check out the Artist of the Day down below! Another fellow Contemporary art Illustrator/Graphic Designer Shepard Faiery.

Artist of the Day; Shepard Fairey (1970-present)

Shepard Faiery is a Contemporary street artist, graphic designer, illustrator, and founder of OBEY clothing (available @ Newbury Comics). He attended the Rhode Island of Art & Design in the 90's and started his career by referencing Andre the Giant within his artwork and making a name for himself among the streets of Rhode island. In 2008 Fairey showed support for the Obama campaign and created the "Obama Hope Poster" which you may recognize from the past and that launched his career. In 2016 he became apart of the We the People movement which is a nonpartisan campaign dedicated to igniting a national dialogue about American identity and values through public art and story sharing. He currently makes art today--I attached a few links down below to check out if you like his work (one of my favorites).

Hey Everyone,

For todays prompt, I want you to find your keys--house keys, car keys, lanyard with keys, or if you don't have keys borrow someones at home---set them up in front of you with a light source close by and notice the value. Using just pencil OR colored pencil (no paint)---create a observational key drawing using full value on any paper you have at home. Things to think about---what perspective of the keys will you give the viewer? Where is your direct light, highlights, shadows, and cast shadows within and around the object? Try to use most of the paper, take your time, and if you get stuck photograph your still life with a device and adjust picture to black and white to help find values. This assignment is due Tuesday April 7, 2020 by end of day in google classroom---please allow yourself up to an hour* of drawing time for a successful composition ---your final piece should look something like the images on the left of post---NO OUTLINE DRAWINGS. Any questions please email me.

Hey Everyone

Super excited for you to check out this amazing Contemporary artist today, Bradley Theodore! He started by "adorning the streets of New York City with vibrant, chromatic murals of skeletons depicting contemporary pop culture and fashion royalty. " Still known for this colorful painting and prints of fashion icons, Bradleys work can be found in streets of New York, Tokyo, and Milan as giant murals and also in sold-out gallery shows across the world.

His work is focused on the skeletal form but in a non-morbid way. Theodore states, “a skull for me represents a symbol of a person’s spirit. It’s like I’m wrapping someone’s soul around their skeletal system.” Your prompt today, use the skeletal figure and incorporate colors/details that symbolize YOUR spirit and things that make you, you. Focus on color, form, shape, line, and the perspective you want to give the viewer (you don't have to draw a full body skeleton IF you don't want too). Have fun and let the work of Bradley Theodore inspire you! Photograph completed artwork and turn in by end of day/midnight*

You can use your sketchbook from class, a personal sketchbook, printer paper, cardboard, paper bag, old receipt paper, digital drawing app or even notebook paper to make art on! Get creative with what you have available at home! Have fun and enjoy!

I added a couple extras down below--- ART NEWS, Van Gogh heist at a Dutch museum overnight and check out ARTIST OF THE DAY, Salvador Dali who inspired art prompt artist Bradley Theodore and his current work today.

Artist of the Day; Salvador Dali (1904–1989)

The man. The master. The marvel. Spanish artist, Salvador Dalí is one of the most celebrated artists of all time. His fiercely technical yet highly unusual paintings, sculptures and visionary explorations in film and life-size interactive art ushered in a new generation of imaginative expression. From his personal life to his professional endeavors, he always took great risks and proved how rich the world can be when you dare to embrace pure, boundless creativity. In 1929, Dalí officially joined the Surrealist movement, a group of artists dedicated to exploring the creative and often disturbing power of the unconscious mind.

View some of his famous art work below and check out the Salvador Dalí Museum in Florida! You can view the collections, see up-coming exhibits, and download their app to take a virtual tour! https://thedali.org/ Enjoy!

Hey Everyone! Today I broke down prompts and lessons by drawing and painting levels....

DRAWING AND PAINTING 1

I attached 3 videos for you all to watch--Two of them are on next two elements we would have talked about in class. The first is about shape with the focus on the difference between geometric and organic shapes. Second is on form and how that is defined visually in 2D and 3D art. The third video is a drawing practice you can try at home---turn your 2D shapes into 3D forms using pencil (don't forget a light source to help you with value). If you find yourself with more time try the drawing and painting 3 prompt below for some advance drawing.

*Turn your 2D shapes into 3D forms using pencil*

1. Create a light source

2. Watch pencil pressure to give you range from light - dark values

Drawing and Painting 3

Biblical artwork was an important focus during the Renaissance art because of the churches power and influence during that time.

Drawing prompt

I have attached an image of Davids profile from his sculpture. I want you to re-copy this image using graphite BUT also find a way to include color to create something unique.

Artist of the Day; Paul Cézanne (1839–1906)

The work of Post-Impressionist French painter Paul Cézanne is said to have formed the bridge between late 19th century Impressionism and the early 20th century's new line of artistic inquiry, Cubism. The mastery of design, tone, composition and color that spans his life's work is highly characteristic and now recognizable around the world. Both Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso were greatly influenced by Cézanne.

Depicting reality as such was never Cézanne's primary objective. In his own words, it was "something other than reality" that he endeavored to reveal. In the 1880's, Cézanne executed a large number of still lifes, completely reinventing the genre in the two-dimensional mode. The central feature of these still lifes was the crucial shift of attention from the objects themselves, to the forms and colors that were potentially communicated by their surfaces and contours.
