Drawing and Painting 1 have spent the first month of class learning all about lines! Students learned that in drawing almost all works simply start with a line that builds into something more as an artist creates their piece. We look at contour lines and practice using observational techniques to train the eye and hand to work together to draw exactly what you see and not what you think you see. As part of the practice students were instructed to copy a famous contour line drawing by Pablo Picasso upside down, working from the bottom of the image first until the last thing they draw is the head. Students felt challenged but using all they learned thus far in the course they were able to bring Picasso's work to life using their own artist's interpretation. Students Mikey Varnum, Stephanie Bento, and Lucy Sylla from period 6 Drawing & Painting 1 went beyond the assignment expectations and truly created their own unique versions of Picasso’s work. Mikey and Steph chose to enlarge their version of Picasso’s drawing and used two sheets to fit the figure. Lucy took her own approach and added unique features to enhance Picasso’s original piece in the way she sees it. All three demonstrated with practice and concentration, anyone can copy a master of the arts and it all begins with a line. We are so lucky to have all three apart of the fine arts at Stoughton High School!

Students in Mrs. Muse’s Drawing and Painting 1 class started the year off by learning all about lines! To better their drawing skills, students were asked to complete observational drawings using their hands in class. This practice teaches students to build hand-eye coordination and draw exactly what you see and not what you think you see. To practice this skill further students were asked to select a 4-5 letter word and using the sign language alphabet, sign each letter and draw exactly what they see until they spell out the word. Freshman Olivia Tran and Samantha LaFarge have demonstrated true talent when it came to putting together this project. Olivia selected winter and created a holiday themed composition using her hands as holiday decorations. Samantha chose night to represent her piece and developed a galaxy around her hands. Both drawings were done using a variety of materials including colored pencils, sharpies, and paint markers. These ladies have displayed excellent effort in their projects and continue to do so as we start to finish our first painting project using fruit. We are very lucky to have their talents apart of the arts at Stoughton High School!
