Pre-ETS Group Classes
Community Transitions (CT)
CT students played a game called “Getting to Know You”. While the students already know each other pretty well, they had the opportunity to practice asking each other multiple follow-up questions to keep a conversation going. This is an important social skill to have when getting to know someone or when engaging in conversation with a friend.
Dig In!
In Dig In this week, students made snickerdoodle cookies. They learned about perseverance by mixing the cookie dough by hand instead of using an electric mixer.
Let’s Talk About It
Students played a game called "Sell Me This Thing". Everyone took turns being assigned a random object and they were given one minute to talk about each object in a way that they were to try and "sell" it to their peers. Even the instructors got to play! Some of the objects included mashed potatoes, shoes, and a pet chicken. While the students did utilize some persuasive language, the focus of the game was to practice public speaking on the spot. They all did very well!
Student Self-Advocates
This week, the Student Self-Advocates watched a documentary called “Citizen Autistic”. This documentary features members of the autism community sharing their views on a number of controversies surrounding autism advocacy. Students also learned how they can better use their voice and self-advocacy skills to not only speak up for themselves, but to appropriately speak up for other individuals who may not have the ability to do so.
Dungeons & Dragons
In Dungeons & Dragons this week, students attended the adventurer's fair and decided to help local citizens find housing!
