Testing

The ACT is a college admission exam that includes sections on reading, English, science, and math. All juniors enrolled in Stokes County Schools take the test during the school day in the spring. In addition, there are seven national test dates every academic year. Students who want to practice before the test can find many free opportunities online.

The SAT is also a college admission exam that comprises Reading, Math, and Writing and Language sections. It is also offered seven times throughout the academic year. While it is not required, students might choose to take the SAT and are strongly advised to work through a free practice test first to determine whether it's in their best interest to take it.

Students who qualify for free/reduced price lunch can get a fee waiver for the ACT or SAT upon request from their school counselor. Please note that such a request will be held in strict confidence.

Many colleges and universities are test-optional, meaning that students can choose not to submit standardized test scores in support of their application for admission. FairTest compiles a list of all schools that are test-optional, along with any exceptions to the policy. Students typically are asked to provide an additional essay or letter of recommendation if they decide not to submit test scores.
