Located in the bottom balloon, growing food would usually be a hard thing for extraterrestrial colonies, but over on Venus we are using science to our advantage. To grow our food we will use the process of hydroponics. Hydroponics is the growing of plant and crops without the use of water, using hydroponics is more efficient and more compact than normal farming. Also taking away the huge need of a massive soil movement from Earth or digging Venus' soil for farming. On the subject on extraterrestrial soil, if have have any left over plants, we can dig up Venus's soil and use this to see if we can farm any plants with it and use our mining machines to extract any minerals from the soil (More on mining machines in Home). What we will use to plant crops is a combination of a few things.
Now we would like to tell you a few ways we will grow these crops.
One of these few ways will be the Ebb and Flow System. The Ebb and Flow System will be modified a little for more efficiency. We will place plant roots inside of rock-wool, a rock heated to high temperatures and strung out as wool. The rock-wool will be placed over a container. Then the container the container will be flooded with water, and the rock-wool will absorb the water and the seed will absorb the water from the rock-wool. The water will not be too much water to where the plants die of drowning, but to where they get enough nutrients to thrive through the day.
Another way we will grow plants will be the W.I.L.M.A. System aka Water Irrigation Leach-ate Maturity Apparatus. This system uses four to sixteen small, similar reservoirs and using water dripping systems that will drop a controlled amount of water into the reservoirs. Inside the small reservoirs will be rock-wool inside the rock-wool will be the seed that will germinate. We will use rock-wool because of its wool-like structure that absorbs water but also allows it the flow. Once the drop from the dripping machines has been dropped, the droplet will travel through the rock-wool, being absorbed by it, also being absorbed by the seed.
The last way we will grow things will be to combine habitats. The three habitats we will combine will be the Tilapia, Algae, and Kale habitat. The Tilapia will be living inside of the water that the Algae and Kale will receive nutrients from. Combining habitats are more compact and more efficient way of growing plants, which is the reason we chose to do this.
