We have arrived at the end of term 1! This term is the first uninterrupted term we have had in more than two years. A full term, face to face at school. A full term of learning onsite, with their teachers and their peers. We are still functioning within strict Covid safe protocols, but life in schools is slowly returning. The buzz, the excitement, the engagement in learning. We are proud of our children, our staff and our families for all they have achieved this year in term 1. This curriculum newsletter celebrates the culmination of the learning in term 1. The making meaning and taking action with their learning based on their inquiry focus if wellbeing and safety.

Overarching statement:
We all have the right to feel safe, supported and connected to our community and our world. We can all contribute and be involved in creating a safe school environment, physically, socially, emotionally and digitally. We also need to understand how we can be responsible for making good choices to stay safe at home and in the wider community.
Wellbeing underpins all we do, and holding a positive growth mindset enables us all to be responsible for our own success.
We seek to nurture students who feel empowered and involved, and participate in effective actions to enhance student wellbeing, ownership and decision making.
This term we explored what it means to be a school student and a member of the St Thomas More Community. Our Inquiry topic was ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ where we learned all about how to be a SUPER friend, developed strategies to regulate our emotions and practised adopting behaviours that align with our school values.
The children will receive a school map that will have QR codes on it. Their parents will scan the different QR codes that are located on different parts of the map to find out more information about our Inquiry unit.
In Grade One our inquiry this term has focused on the Positive Behaviours for Learning - Respect, Safety, Responsibility and Resilience.
The children have been learning about what these look like inside and outside the classroom. The children drew examples of these and they are displayed in the classroom to remind us to demonstrate these behaviours.
In Maths, we have been learning about Place Value. The children made Place Value monsters using MAB. Children used tens and ones to create the features of their monster and calculated how much their monster was worth.
This term, for our Inquiry unit, we learned about our P.B.L. values. We unpacked them in detail and learned about how to apply them in different settings. We then made information posters for others to refer to and learn from, as well as serve as a reminder of what these values look like.
In Inquiry this term, the Grade 3’s have been learning strategies that empower them to make good choices when solving problems. The students have learnt about the traffic light system, and have discussed the importance of using this system when solving problems.
The Grade 3 students had an opportunity to organise images on Canva that demonstrate what having a choice looks like.
In Inquiry the Grade 4 students have been exploring their emotions and investigating different ways to best manage these. Throughout the term the students have explored how various emotions feel and strategies they can use to cope in different situations. For their final piece the Grade 4 children designed and created a product that they will use to support them when managing their emotions.

In Grade 5 this term we have been learning what to do in bullying scenarios, whether it be at school or online. We have learned the importance of being an upstander, rather than a bystander. The Grade 5's created a final project designed to inform the school community about bullying and educate them about how to be upstanders.
Lachlan and Allegra created this awesome info graphic to improve awareness and understanding of Bullying!
In year 6, over the past few weeks we have been busily working away at our Inquiry projects of how to promote being an Upstander around the St Thomas More community. We have been working on projects such as fundraisers, posters, advertisements, animations and web pages to promote our ideas. They are all coming together nicely and we are excited to share our vision with the entire year level.
In maths, we have been getting ready for camp (YAY!) by learning about location and mapping. Through 4 quadrant planes and coordinates we have been learning how to precisely locate information and give specific direction.
During our writing sessions we have been working hard on our Ted Talks where we were able to choose a topic we are passionate about and give our own opinion on the matter. We have worked hard to create our speeches, cue cards and slides. We are currently rehearsing our talks and are also very excited to finally present them.
We have been training hard for our Interschool Sport Grandfinal that will be played on Friday 1st of April. All of the St Thomas More teams have gone the season undefeated and we are nervous and excited to ALL be in the grand final. Wish us luck!
