tips for transition

Develop Independence

• Making sure your child can get dressed independently
• knows what to wear when e.g. when sports uniform is required
• lunchboxes - what you eat when e.g. what to eat 1st break & 2nd Break
• being able to open food packets, wrappers and containers
• drink bottles - bringing home for cleaning and where drink bottles live when in class
• bags - knowing what is inside them, how to open and close them

Develop Responsibility

• Make sure your child carries their own bag & follows the morning routines around organising their belongings and equipment for the day
• Label all belongings
• make sure your child knows where to find lost property (next to junior toilets in admin building)
• wearing hats in terms 1 & 4

Being prepared for 'Goodbye'

• Saying goodbye to parents/ caregivers at the gate / door when coming in to school
• Reinforce that they will see you at the end of the day
• always be positive and quick at school drop off

Managing the uniform

• take their jumpers/ jackets on and off
• recognise their name on the label of each item of clothing / hat
• do up and undo:

Toileting at school

• clean themselves
• utilise urinals (boys) ** NB- The school has automatic flush urinals

• flush toilets

• turn taps on/ off at the wash basin

• use drinking taps (Post Covid - at the moment all children will drink from their own drink bottles only)

Being Positive

• engage in positive talk about school
• Cheerful goodbyes - “Have a great day! See you soon!” - even if your child is sad
• Quick goodbyes - If they are sad, the longer your child can see you when saying goodbye, the more likely they are to become more anxious about you leaving.
• Instead of asking the typical “What did you do today?”, ask “What have been the good things in your day today?”
