Knowledge Question: How might the existence of different historical perspectives be beneficial to historical knowledge? (perspectives)
Activity: if you had to place 3 objects that best represent the most significant aspects of the history of your town/city, county or country in a museum, what would those objects be and why?
In the next 20 minutes make 3 presentation slides to show each of these articles with a brief justification for why you have included it. See Mr Seymour's attempt below...I have used 'objects' in quite a broad sense!
This is Hay Tor. It is a Granite outcrop found in Dartmoor National Park. Tors like this are a distinctive feature of the county I am from, Devon
My first object is a Granite Tor
This is the lane I used to walk up to get to school.
It is an example of a Holloway, which is a deep or sunken path (often lined with trees or hedgerow). They often indicate a path that has been used for hundreds of years.
You can also see the red soil, typical of the Devonian Sandstone found in the area - so social and natural history in one picture!
My second object is a Holloway
Historically (and still today) Devon makes most of its money from agriculture - particularly from dairy farming, so I felt I had to get a cow in as one of my three things.
One of my first holiday jobs was working in the local dairy packing UHT milk!
My third object is a cow (or a carton of UHT milk)
To conclude...
If you are from the same place as someone else in the group have you picked the same things?
Everyone's version of important is different. This is reflected in the history they record.
What do different histories tell us?
