"It is magic until you understand it and it is mathematics thereafter"
Three reasons to study Mathematics
Mathematics is used by people on a regular basis at work and in everyday life.
Many courses and jobs require a minimum GCSE grade in mathematics.
Mathematics helps you to approach problems in a logical manner.
What students have to say about Mathematics
“I like maths because I like solving problems - it’s kind of nice to know that you have got the right answer.”
“I like maths because it makes you think, but you don’t have to write long essays or do coursework!”
“I like maths because the lessons are broken up into different activities.”
Course content
In GCSE mathematics, students will build upon the skills that they have learned in Years 7-9. Each half term, students complete an assessment to review their progress and complete personalised intervention work to maximise understanding of key topics and concepts. Assessments always have a “review and recall” section to ensure students are recalling and retaining previous learning.
At the end of Year 11, students will complete three examinations which cover all the work studied in the two year course. Each of the papers are equally weighted and are 1 hour 30 minutes each in length. Paper 1 is non-calculator and Papers 2 and 3 are calculator. Foundation tier awards Grades 1-5 and higher tier Grades 4-9.
In GCSE Mathematics students will learn about the number system and how to effectively work with numbers including percentages, fractions, decimals and ratios; the use of algebra to solve problems involving unknowns; properties of shapes and space and how to effectively use measures; the use of statistics and data handling to collect, present and analyse data; and how to apply this broad range of mathematical concepts to solve problems, both abstract and in context.
