You have learnt verbs to describe every day actions, such as hit, run, walk, skip, pass, jump, hop and jog. Many sports has special words to describe actions unique to the game. For example in volleyball a spike is a special smashing of the ball. Look for a "How to video" on the sport to find these words.
Look for a video which will help you learn new words related to volleyball. For example, I have chosen the video below because I am also from the Philippines. The words I have learnt are ace, assist, attack, cut, dig, double, dump, free ball and joust.
Self-management behaviours are important to improve your game. These include:
seeking knowledge
seeking feedback and/or feed forward
meeting challenges
being resourceful
working with others
setting goals
time management
being adaptable
using self control
risk management
showing resilience
seeking motivation
showing perseverance when dealing with both disappointment and success.
Think about how you can show self-management in a volleyball game. Give specific examples (see bottom of the page for answers)
Read this article "Four Work Team Lessons from the Volleyball Court" use it as a model to help you write about self-management in volleyball. For example, volleyball is a fast game and the ball comes at players non-stop for up to 45 minutes. It is easy to miss a serve, hit a ball in the wrong direction or misjudge how far to jump up to hit the ball. Self management by showing resilience means I expect to make mistakes and I will not freeze when I make a mistake. If I freeze it makes me not flexible when I am running for the next ball. In addition, I may carry that mistake with me into the next play. (Notice how I changed the pronouns, used simpler verbs and shorter sentences.)
Here are some videos that talk about self management in a general way.
I sought more knowledge about volleyball from Youtube, websites and books from the school library.
I sought feedback and/or feed forward from my coach, team members and more experienced players in my class. I made a peer assessment sheet for my classmates to assess me on specific skills and areas I needed to work on to improve my skills.
I met challenges because I had poor technique. I was not discouraged and practised the techniques taught in class over and over again.
I was resourceful when I asked to join the local social volleyball team which played every Monday night.
I worked well with my team by communicating, supporting and encouraging my team members to work together in unity.
I set a long term goal of learning to float, topspin and jump serve. I practised every evening before dinner for 20 mins.
I had good time management and got to volleyball practice on time. I was focused for the whole hour and was not distracted or play around with my friends.
Volleyball can be played indoors or out, year-round, with many participants or just two-on-two. I was adaptable and was happy to play with different people, numbers and locations.
I had self control and remained calm under pressure. In games where the score was close, some players made simple mistakes under stress. I took a deep breath, said a quick prayer and exercised control over my emotions.
I managed risk whenever I made sure the volleyball court was clear of leaves and the medicinal cupboard is well stocked.
I was showing resilience when I returned to the volleyball court in the middle of a match even though the heel of my hand hurt from smacking the ball too hard.
I sought motivation by watching World Cup volleyball matches on Youtube.
I showed perseverance when our team lost two matches we were disappointed but did not give up. We kept trying and improving our game. When we successfully won a game, we were happy but we did not become too confident. We kept on learning new skills.
