Mount Vernon is a fantastic site to see on your trip to Washington DC. Its not only a very common landmark to see, but also George Washington’s plantation house. George and Martha Washington lived in Mount Vernon for 15 years before the Revolutionary War. After the War George Washington retired and focused most of his time on farming for the rest of his life. He died from a brief illness on December 14th, 1799 at the age of 67. He died in George Washington's bedroom. Mount Vernon is 10 times the size of an average home in Virginia. It holds 21 rooms in the 11,000 square foot mansion. The whole lot is 7,600 acres. The Washington family once held 677 guests in there house. The Mount Vernon Ladies Association bought 200 acres of land for $200 thousand in 1858. Mount Vernon was inherited by George Washington in 1761. He began running it in 1754. IN the next 45 years he kept adding to his house and slowly enlarged it. Mount Vernon is definitely a place to go and see!
