If you have visual stress it means that part of your brain gets overstimulated while you're reading and the letters and words can look like they are moving, sliding, dancing, vibrating. reading through a coloured layer can help to reduce or stop this and make reading easier and more comfortable.

Visual Stress is a visual processing condition that causes reading difficulties, headaches and visual problems from seeing patterns in text, such as lines of text. Visual Stress is sometimes linked to dyslexia and similar visual learning difficulties. Sufferers experience the text moving or appearing strangely and fatigue when reading.
Symptoms of visual stress:
Light sensitivity (e.g. problems reading from a computer screen)
Problems reading and writing.
Eye strain.
Headaches.
Feeling tired.
Watery eyes.
Problems with depth perception (clumsiness and an inability to judge distances well)
Distortions in writing (words can appear to move or appear blurry)
This happens because a part of the brain called the visual cortex is over stimulated and basically gets overexcited. The text then appeares different with stripes, blurriness, letters moving or colours appearing.
This is known as Visual Stress or Meares-Irlen Syndrome.
