Modern Studies Department
In first and second year Science you get to study topics which are rotated between Chemistry, Biology and Physics to allow you to get a taste of everything. First year topics include:
Becoming a Scientist (Chemistry),
Life on the Edge (Biology,
Essential Energy (Physics),
Marvellous Matter (Chemistry),
Next Generation (Biology),
To Inifinity and Beyond (Physics).
The topics that are studied during your first couple of years especially are very much practical orientated to give a full experience of your three Sciences.
They involve many great experiments and creative opportunities that we love displaying, to show our pride in all your work.
Below are some pictures of Biomes in a Box created by some of last year's S1. There is also a picture of our S1's learning how to use quadrats to measure the abundance of plants in a specific area.

Through your time in Science, we like to recognise pupils who put in effort, work hard, help others, and show a great attitude towards their scientific work. Pupils are presented with certificates and their name is added to the board in the science corridor. We look forward to seeing lots of new names there as 'Science Superstars'.
Miss Blair, one of our amazing Biology teachers, runs the Eco-Group in the school who had a fantastic year making us all very aware of ways we can help the environment. Guess what? We only went and did it! We have our first Green Flat. Really proud of our school community, especially our Eco-Group who have worked hard to ensure our school becomes more sustainable.
"Our pupils heard the call to arms last year and became determined to do what they can to help in the fight against climate change. We set up a recycling system for our cans, plastics and paper, and we made our staff think about how they could conserve energy for the sake of our planet. We held sustainable fashion events and showed the pupils little ways they could make a difference to our world. This year, we want to go further. Are you up for the challenge? If you are a budding Eco Warrior or have been a part of the Eco-schools project in your Primary, there is the opportunity to 'do your bit' and help our school become more sustainable for the future. We love new recruits and fresh ideas!"
