The solution used by drivers new and old should aim to get each motorist the most relevant and accurate information on their driving style/ habits so that they can increase their fuel economy, safety on the street , and longevity of working parts in the vehicle.
Statement-Restatement technique: The real problem is that drivers on the road are unsafe, which causes them to use more gasoline per trip vs. the stated problem of poor driving habits causing bad gas mileage. We would be constrained by utilizing the technology within the phone which the app is downloaded to gather the movement data of the vehicle. We would not have access to any cameras attached to the vehicle or installed from the factory. With our app we hope to motivate drivers to drive safely by giving them a report card after every drive scoring their various driving points on a letter and number scale. We would need to input many hours of coding and testing to make sure the app gives accurate outputs. One of many unknowns we would face is OS or software updates on the devices which prevent our app from working, or outdated/obscure models of phones which are incompatible with our software.
Situation Analysis:
Timing - the timing for a product that increases user mileage has not been better than over the last year. With the increase in gas prices and the overall low confidence consumers have in energy, this is a great time to introduce a product that customers can trust regardless of gas prices and energy situation. Furthermore, with the introduction of newer and better features embedded in modern vehicles, customers feel that they are missing out on their current vehicles.
Trend - a strong sense of environmental responsibility has been overtaking the minds of the younger generation, especially over the last couple of years. Keeping older cars for longer helps the environment tremendously. However, consumers will be giving up modern vehicle features, like mileage tracking, to help the environment. Our solution allows customers to curb their carbon footprint whilst still enjoying the features a modern vehicle offers.
Impact - when customers understand that the ‘exclusive’ features of a newer car model are not exclusive after all and can in fact be implemented with technologies that they already own (smartphone), they will be delighted and open their minds to other creative ideas to improve what they already have to something better.
