The Concert Band performs high-quality literature at three concerts at SCPA as well as a performance at the MSHSL Contest. Concert Band includes 9th- and 10th graders as well as select 8th-graders. Students from this group also perform solos and ensembles at contest. Concert Band rehearses daily for about 45 minutes and includes weekly sectionals.
Concert Band students have a strong foundation of music reading skills and start to play a wider variety of music than in middle school. They work on scales and technique in all 12 keys and become more independent in the parts they play. Students learn to incorporate improvisation in their regular practice routine.
SCPA hosts a Solo and Ensemble festival each January. All students participate by performing as part of a chamber group (usually 3–6 students) and have the option of preparing a solo (usually with piano accompaniment).
Each solo and ensemble performs for a judge and receives a critique.
Parents (and other guests) are welcome to attend Solo and Ensemble. Students do not need to be present for the whole event (just their own performance(s)), but they often support one another by listening to each other's events.
