Ranging from the removal of the old Café to the implementation of the Octopus prepaid machines, the school cafeteria system has undergone various changes over the past few months aimed at the betterment of students and teachers alike.
Prior to the modifications, teachers and students had to queue for prolonged periods for meals, simultaneously causing overcrowding in the corridors and doorways. As your queuing period was largely determined by the time you left class, this resulted in students with classes on upper floors bundling down the staircases in the hopes of reducing queuing times.
The newly implemented Octopus prepaid machine system has been very popular with students. “[The Octopus prepaid machines] makes the ordering process faster, easier, and more accurate”, expressed Marcus Chan (Year 10), “Through the digital ordering system, it has never been more convenient to pre-order or purchase a meal”, added Jason Tang (Year 10).
With the ticketing system in place, students have the option to purchase tickets before school or during break times and quickly collect their meals during lunch, reducing waiting times and improving efficiency. “I can use the machine during the first break when there is no line so that once class ends, I can use the ticket I got from first break to take my food, making the process faster and more simple.” Marcus commented.
Although the prepaid Machines have indubitably reduced queuing times, students now have to queue up twice before collecting their desired meals. One may wonder whether the introduction of these machines have significantly impacted students queuing times. Harrison Cai (Year 10) believes that “[the cafeteria system] is too complicated, it should be more simple like a first-come, first-served system.”
Furthermore, Chartwells has introduced an assortment of new food items which has gained tremendous popularity among the school community.“While [the cafeteria system] is not flawless, the wide array of new items is now enticing those who previously brought home lunch,” stated Jason.
From the salad and noodle bar to the highly-anticipated return of soup to the daily chef’s special, it is clear that despite not being immaculate, Chartwells has undeniably experienced a much-needed makeover.
