Year 11 prom, one of the most anticipated nights of the school year, took place on Friday, April 12th. A month prior, students had voted for the night’s theme - “Casino Night” - and the prom committee did not disappoint! Stepping into Hotel ICON’s grand ballroom, students were transported into a scene à la Las Vegas, complete with a roulette wheel, giant poker cards as photo props, and dice on every table.
Attendees arrived at 6 p.m., dressed to the nines. Before doors opened, students had time to mingle and admire each other’s gorgeous gowns and sharp suits. It was also the perfect opportunity to use the photo booth and backdrops, capturing moments with friends and teachers, or to strike poses on the hotel’s glamorous spiral staircase. “Everyone worked really hard on it,” said Jasmine Bhanja (11D2), a member of the prom committee. “I’m glad it all came together in the end”.
As the evening began, prom-goers indulged in a buffet dinner that spanned a variety of delectable cuisines, as well as dessert. The night’s entertainment was a fantastic line-up of performances by the Year 11 students themselves. This included energetic K-pop and hip-hop dances routines, classical music solos, and vocal duets, spanning genres from jazz to rap. Audrey Lai (11X2), who performed ‘Just the Two of Us’ with her band, remarked, “It was a fun night, and a great distraction from my impending exams”.
Superlative awards were also handed out, ranging from ‘most likely to become president’ to ‘best smile/laugh’. Another highlight was an STC tradition - prom videos. Each tutor group was tasked with creating a short, creative video to be played at prom, and they delivered! Attendees were treated to watching fun choreography that included the whole class, parodies of music videos, and photo montages recapping the 5-year long journey since Y7.
Finally, the night concluded with an hour for dancing. Friend groups, couples, and teachers gathered on the dance floor to let their hair down. The playlist of songs suggested by students proved popular, with much of the year group circling together to belt the lyrics of ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ by One Direction. It was the perfect way to cap off a wonderful night of celebration, camaraderie, and creating memories.
A heartfelt thank you to the students, teachers, and staff on the prom committee for organizing such a wonderful evening, and we wish the Year 11s all the best in their upcoming exams!
