“New year, new me” is a statement that both students and teachers alike are committing to early this year. As we ring in 2024, many people have been reflecting on their past year and setting New Year’s Resolutions to better their habits and well-being. From school to personal life, let’s take a closer look at the new goals of the STC community.
Multiple students felt they could get higher scores on their assessments and exams. “I want my grades to improve because I think I could do better than where my grades are now,” said Sabrina Yau (8D1), “and I think it would make my parents satisfied.” She plans to study more, try her best to procrastinate less, and ask her tutors for any help she needs. Similarly, Ethan Tang (12X1) aspires to “see the fruition of [his] hard work through consistent good grades”, as academic studies are a crucial part of students’ everyday lives.
In the spirit of renewed determination, our teachers, too, hope to achieve various personal goals by the end of the year. Reading twelve books this year is just one of Mr Helmkamp’s resolutions, which he aims to achieve by reading a book a month. Although the end of January is drawing near and he is behind in completing the first book, he plans to “kick it into gear” during the Chinese New Year break. Another goal of Mr Helmkamp’s is to run at least two or three races this year. “I used to go run like 10 [kilometres] and stuff pretty often but I haven't done one in a few years. I haven't been running too much since I had a small surgery and can't right now, but I'll usually try to go around 3 times a week.”
Having only moved to Hong Kong five months ago, Ms Wilson is eager to “spend more time getting to know Hong Kong”. In the city that we all know and love, there are a great deal of things to experience. She is determined to familiarise herself with Hong Kong by “going on regular hikes and visiting as many new places as possible”.
As our school community's dreams and ambitions take shape, another student is keen to share her resolutions for the upcoming year - Scarlett Tam (12X2) wants to boost her physical and mental well being, saying, “Neither my health [nor] motivation last year was great, so I hope that being able to get more fresh air and increasing my step count will help with this.” Aiming to reach 10,000 steps each day, Scarlett will walk home from school more often and choose walking over taking public transportation whenever possible.
Whether student or staff, each new resolution contributes a unique addition to the ever-growing canvas of possibilities. What are your goals for 2024?
