With 33 bans, Tricks was one of the 11 most banned books of 2023, according to Pen America. The treatment of controversial topics, such as drug use, sex work, sexual abuse, and suicide, has led to intense discussions and questions in the United States regarding the depiction of these subjects in youth and educational literature.
After writing Tricks, the author, Ellen Hopkins recieved this message from a reader saying, “I am a gay male, living in rural TN. When I was introduced to Seth in Tricks, I actually understood his pain . . . I just wanted to thank you for writing about him. It made me realize how many more people out there go through what I have been through and still am enduring.”
