Pupils with Physical Impairment
We have integrated provision for physically impaired pupils. We have the capacity to accommodate pupils with a range of complex needs within mainstream classes, supported, where necessary by specialist teachers and a team of pupil support assistants. We have the facility to provide on-site physiotherapy and speech and language therapy and occupational therapy can be organised through the appropriate bodies in the LA. As the school is on one level access is appropriately designed for non-ambulant pupils. Applications for entry for pupils with additional needs are considered in partnership with the Pupil Support Service of the LA.
Admission arrangements for pupils with disabilities.
Pupils between 3 and 11 years (Primary Age Pupils) may be admitted on the recommendation of a statement of special needs, where the pupil’s needs have been matched to the provision available at St Athan Primary School, a mainstream school with the capacity to accept pupils who have physical disabilities. Pupils are admitted subject to annual reviews. Changes in the pupils needs can be reassessed at any time, if required. Admissions in these circumstances are arranged by Pupil Support Services in consultation with the school, parents and other relevant bodies.
Pupils without a statement of special needs may be admitted in the nursery and reception classes through the recognised school / county policy and procedures and their needs assessed on admission. The school may need to carry out initial assessments in consultation with parents and other relevant persons to ensure that the pupil’s needs can be safely and appropriately met prior to admission. This is particularly important where specialised equipment and additional staff requirements are required. The school and the LA Pupil Support Services will endeavour to make reasonable arrangements to ensure pupils with disabilities have access to all aspects. Assessments may lead to pupils receiving a statement of special needs, making recommendations for future placements and provision.
Parents and pupils are welcome to visit the school to see what we are able to offer for pupils with disabilities. It is important that parents and pupils are able to make informed decisions regarding potential admissions.
For specific admissions details please refer to the Vale LA Admissions Policy available at the school or from the LA. Sections 2.1, 2.2, 5.3 & 8.1)
Equal Opportunities and Disability
At St Athan Primary School we have a uniquely inclusive, positive and proactive school environment that caters for all children, staff, parents and visitors. All are treated as individuals and personal, physical, ethnic and cultural characteristics, needs are differences are respected, valued and celebrated. The schools ethos embraces diversity as an integral part of school life and the wider community. Access and inclusion are considered for all aspects of the school. The school is designed to provide open access for all and we always endeavour to make the necessary reasonable arrangements possible to ensure equal access to the curriculum and all other activities. The school has a Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) / Disability Equality Scheme (DES) policy / Scheme and an accessibility plan (as required under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995) to ensure physical, social, personal and educational access is suitably achieved as far as it is reasonably possible. Our schemes of work and daily routines actively promote disability awareness and equal opportunities. Every effort is made to ensure that disabled pupils are not treated les favourably than other pupils, through thorough planning and risk assessments. This may involve specialised provision, differentiated tasks / activities and resources to provide equalised opportunities. Discrimination on the grounds of disability will not be tolerated. Staff and Governors are fully aware of their obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act and the Disability Equality Duty.
Please see admission arrangements for pupils with disabilities in Appendices.
A full copy of the Disability Equality Scheme (DES) Policy / Scheme and an Accessibility Plan is available upon request please note that this is under review following the completion of major structural works to the school – accessibility is now greatly improved.
