One of the main purposes for engaging families and communities is to shift power toward those who utilize the services and programs offered. They know what works and what is challenging. They know the barriers and how to improve services. They know what topics need to be addressed.
Coordinate with staff and leaders to share system problems or needs with members. Members provide valuable input to shape and update systems to ensure they work more effectively and best serve those most impacted.
For the Family Voice Council, each month, presenters share information about their programs and services and members provide in-depth feedback and input based on their lived experience.
The meetings are co-facilitated by a member. The facilitator and staff member meet with presenters prior to the meeting to prepare them and ensure they are coming to the meeting for true guidance from the group. Presenters are asked to come with the intent to make change.
Legislative and policy action is a focus for members. Based on member feedback, professional development is offered to members and many go on to communicate with legislators through emails, letters, and testifying.
