English 9 (freshman English) is a required course that focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students will read a variety of literature, including short stories, poems, plays, novels, and nonfiction selections. Literary terms, such as theme, point of view, tone, and conflict, will be used to discuss and analyze literature. Improved writing proficiency will be a focus through journaling, short response, and essay writing and will include the incorporation of grammar lessons. Communication, speaking and listening skills, will be emphasized in group work, class discussions, and informal and formal presentations.

10TH GRADE

ENGLISH 10 (ENG205/ENG206)

English 10 is the standard option for fulfilling the sophomore English requirement. Students will continue their growth in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Course literature will include short stories, poems, plays, novels, and nonfiction pieces. Students will work toward proficiency in reading and writing for a variety of purposes. Research skills will be introduced to acquaint students with a variety of sources used in the research process. 

HONORS ENGLISH 10 (ENG219/ENG220)

Prerequisite:  B+ or higher grade in both semesters of English 9 recommended. Completion of summer reading/writing assignment is required.

This course is another option for fulfilling the sophomore English requirement.  Honors English 10 is a comprehensive, in-depth course geared for students interested in challenging themselves with a rigorous program of reading, writing, discussion, and close study of literature. Course study includes selections from classical world literature through modern fiction, memoir, and poetry.  Students are encouraged to develop clear, precise written and oral communication skills through composition, speech, and class discussion.

11TH GRADE

ENGLISH 11 (ENG305/ENG306)

The coursework consists of a survey of American Literature, poetry and drama. Incorporated into these studies will be further development of writing skills, close reading skills, group and individual analysis, speech and presentation skills, and research skills. Students will be progressing toward their college/career readiness.

COLLEGE PREPARATORY ENGLISH 11 (ENG317/ENG318)

College Preparatory English 11 is a rigorous English course designed to prepare students for the reading, writing, collaborating, and speaking skills required in college/university-level academics. This course requires consistent effort and emphasis upon developing independence of thought and mature habits of critical thinking. Classroom discussions, seminars, and active participation are vital and serve as a means of testing and expanding ideas. Written assignments, both short- and long-term, are an important and frequent feature of the course.

Coursework will include a survey of American literature, both canonical and modern fiction, poetry, and drama. In this course, students will write a number of analytical essays, complete a college preparation portfolio, collaborate on reading projects and presentations, and study some challenging literature. Students may earn 5 college credits through EVCC's College in the High School program while completing this course. 

AP LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION  (ENG425/ENG426)

College in the High School: 5 Credits at EvCC 

This is a college-level, year-long course designed to help students analyze sophisticated texts with confidence and develop a more mature writing style.  Students learn to successfully communicate with audience and purpose in mind, using the rhetorical situation to guide all choices.  The reading focuses on essays, speeches, and other non-fiction selections, along with a variety of fiction novels.  Novels are examined through a rhetorical lens.  Students engage in discussions of the texts and develop both informal and formal compositions in a variety of modes, including but not limited to rhetorical analysis, synthesis, argument, and literary analysis.  Special attention is given to the process of writing, including timed writing for exams.


Students can expect regular homework assignments and a heavy reading load.  Participation and regular class attendance is essential for success.  This course is an opportunity for students to think more critically about the power of language and how it shapes our world, as well as a chance to improve their skills in using language in powerful ways.  


Students are encouraged to take the AP exam for English Language and Composition given in May, which may earn them college credit.


Students are encouraged to enroll in EvCC's College in the High School program at no cost. Students may earn 5 college English credits for English 101 through this course.

12TH GRADE

ENGLISH 12 (ENG405/ENG406)

English 12 (senior English) coursework will include a survey of British and World literature, poetry, and drama transitioning into more modern texts as the year progresses. Incorporated into these studies will be the further development of writing skills, close reading skills, group and individual analysis, and speech and presentation skills. An important component of English 12 is the mastery of post high school level reading, writing, speaking, listening, and analyzing skills. Students will create a 13th Year Portfolio in preparation for their post high school plans.

COLLEGE PREPARATORY ENGLISH 12 (ENG317/ENG318)

College Preparatory English 12 is a rigorous English course designed to prepare students for the reading, writing, collaborating, and speaking skills required in college/university-level academics. The course requires consistent effort and puts emphasis upon developing independence of thought and mature habits of critical thinking. Classroom discussions, Socratic seminars, and active participation are vital and serve as a means of testing ideas and thoughts.

Written assignments, both short- and long-term, are an important and frequent feature of the course. Coursework will include British and world literature, both canonical and modern fiction, poetry, and drama. First semester will include a college portfolio, intended to assist students on college selection, application, and admittance; second semester will include discussions surrounding scholarship opportunities and college/university survival skills. Students will write a number of analytical essays, will study some challenging literature, and will collaborate on class projects and presentations, all in preparation for success in higher education. Students may earn 5 college credits through EVCC’s College in the High School program while completing this course.

AP LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION (ENG429/ENG430)

This is a college-level, year-long course with a focus on literary analysis of poetry, drama, and fiction. Literature surveyed will span Anglo-Saxon epics through the 21st century. Participating in small and large group discussions and practicing advanced composition skills are a regular classroom practice, including timed in-class essays.

Students should expect a heavy reading load (nightly homework) and a rigorous pace of assignments. This course is an opportunity for students to broaden their reading tastes, challenge themselves, and sharpen their critical thinking skills.  Students will be expected to take the AP Literature and Composition exam in May, which may earn them college credit. Students may earn 5 college credits through EVCC’s College in the High School program while completing this course.
