When you think of physical education, this is the main part that should come to mind - the physical skills. And you would be correct! Physical Education is a performanced based discipline that takes place in a dynamic environment. There is constant movement going on and students are actively involved in a variety of warm-up activities, practice tasks, skill application and all kinds of vigorous pursuits. These are all learning experiences designed specifically for your child and each one is carefully planned and implemented to lead students closer to mastery.
The Archdiocese has created a database of standards for physical education that guides my curriculum and defines what students should be able to know and do by the end of each grade level. Lessons/units are created based on these grade level outcomes (GLOs) to keep students on course for achieving competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.
How is the Skill Grade Calculated?
In grades 1-2 I believe each child is at a 3 (proficient) and I grade as such. Children change so quickly that a skill that is not achieved today could very well be tomorrow! This philosophy is driven in part by the amount of time your child is given within the school day/week. I work hard to expose them in a variety of ways to the age appropriate skills they need throughout the school year driven in large part by the Archdiocese standards for physical education.
Students in grades 3-8 self-assess at the end of each unit. I have found over the years that, for the most part, students are very honest about their skill level. I also want that ownership of grading themselves to be a part of them feeling good about moving.
