Unlike traditional pedometers that only count steps, the Gopher FITstep Pro and FITstep Stream pedometers measure total activity time, Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) and step counts on 3 different screens students can scroll through. They are an extremely accurate 3-D pedometer/accelerometer that counts movement forward, backward, up, down, left and right.
I use a class set of pedometers for my 3-8 PE classes. Each student is given a "student code" number and has the corresponding numbered pedometer assigned to them in the free FITStep software. Typically I have students enter the gym and get their pedometer first thing. Once they have put on their pedometer they may start the warm up activity for the day. I own the FITStep Stream Bluetooth pedometers, so, students wear the pedometers throughout class and at the end of class they press the blue button on the outside of their pedometer. This automatically uploads all their personal activity information to the computer software program via Bluetooth. After they upload, they reset it, put them away in the corresponding section of the pedometer case and line up.
I use these pedometers as an objective representation of a person's ability to control how much and how hard they physically move within a class period. At the beginning of the school year we discuss they many blessings God gives us. Some people are blessed with artistic talents, some with mathematical talents, while others have been blessed with athletic talents. One thing most everyone is blessed with is the ability to move! In order to become a life-long mover, I stress the importance of finding the ways to move that each person enjoys. With that in mind, everyone can discover ways to move to improve/maintain a degree of physical health.
