Schedule your Listening/Writing Test
Schedule your Speaking Test
Test your Zoom equipment to make sure your audio and video are working properly.
The English for Foreign Students (EFS) placement process consists of two steps, 1) a listening and writing test, and then 2) a one-on-one oral interview with an EFS instructor.
For both of these steps, you will use the Zoom video conferencing system. Please login to Zoom using a PC, Mac or Linux device that will allow you to share video and audio of yourself.
1) Listening/Writing Test
The writing and listening tests will be completed during a webinar on one of three dates. Plan on 150 minutes of uninterrupted time.
The first 10 minutes will be dedicated to orientation and questions. You will have an opportunity to ask any questions you might have about the tests and their outcomes, as well as EFS courses.
The next 30 minutes will be dedicated to the listening test. You will watch a video and respond to several multiple choice questions. Please download the attached answer sheet before the exam; you may print it out and write on it, or complete it digitally. Remember that you will need to watch a video to complete this test, so it may not be possible to complete the form digitally if you only have one screen available.
After the test, you will have 5 minutes to upload your answers to Canvas by submitting an appropriate file: pdf, doc, docx, txt, jpg, png
We will have a short break in between the listening and writing tests.
The final 60 minutes will be dedicated to the writing test. You will be given a topic and asked to submit a composition, so be sure you can comfortably type on the device in English and upload a file (txt, doc, docx, or pdf only).
The available dates for the Webinar are the following. Please note that all times are listed local to Pacific (GMT-7).

General Notes
You must register for your interview and for your writing test at least 24 hours in advance. You will receive a confirmation via the Stanford email address that you enter on the form. You may cancel or change your session up to 24 hours before the time you choose.
For both portions of the process, please have on hand your Stanford University Identification Number (SUID) and SUNet (the first part of your Stanford email address) before you begin.
During the writing portion, you will need to be able to create and upload a .doc, .docx, .pdf, or .txt file to the test by the end of the 60-minute time period. We recommend using a full keyboard to respond to the writing prompt. Be sure that you will not be interrupted during the writing exam, and that you will be able to concentrate and show your best work.
