READERS
In the junior school home learning policy at our school, children are expected to read for at least 10-15 minutes every night. This is so valuable to their literacy development and one of the most important (and easy) things that you can do with them every day.
The reading log book is found in your child's reader pouch and needs to be returned with their readers every MONDAY so they can be changed and returned that afternoon.
Remember that the readers are designed to be achievable and promote confidence in their abilities - to consolidate their learning rather than to challenge it.
Reading should be fun! An activity that opens up their world and their imagination - Enjoy it!
SPORT UNIFORM
All grade Prep/1 children need to wear their sport uniform on either WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY.
On all other days they need to wear their normal school uniform including black shoes and white socks.
BUDDIES
Our Prep children all have Grade 6 buddies.
They are very important to us.
Our buddies check in with us in the playground, they help us when we need something, they check in with us to make sure we are ok and they also make sure we are following the school rules.
TIMETABLE
TALKING ABOUT YOUR DAY
Try asking a S.O.C.K question.
S.O.C.K. questions are:
Specific
Open-ended
Creative
Kid-friendly
For example:
If you want to know about your child's feelings...
What is something that made you smile today?
If you could invent a new feeling, what would it be called? How would you describe it?
If your mood were a type of weather, what would it be? Would it be sunny, cloudy, stormy or something else?
If you want to know about your child's learning...
Can you teach me how to...?
What is one thing you learned today?
Can you tell me about a story you heard/read today?
What was your favourite thing you did at school today?
What is something that made you proud at school today?
If you want to know about your child's interests...
If you could be a teacher for a day, what you teach about?
If you became Prime Minister, what is the first thing you would do?
Who is someone you'd love to meet in real life?
If you could teleport anywhere, where would you go right now?
MINDFULNESS
Mindfulness is about focusing on the present moment and being aware of our sensations, thoughts and feelings.
Lots of meditations and breathing activities can be found on:
When Mindfulness is used with children it can:
Calm the mind & body
Increase focus & attention
Increase ability to learn
Reduce reactive behaviours
Develop self-awareness
Help them to tune into and manage their own emotions
Increase resilience
Lessen anxiety & stress
Provide a life long coping skill
Help them to enjoy more of the present moment
Finger breathing
- Hold out your hand and spread your fingers
- Using the pointer finger of your other hand trace along each finger.
- As you rise up the finger then breath in and then as you go down the other side of
the finger breath out.
- Breath in through your nose and then out through your mouth.
- Do this for each hand.
