Service for a Sustainable Future
Service aims to purposefully engage learners to contribute directly to the environmental, economic and social challenges within Bahrain and the global community. It involves developing competencies in order to tackle, among others, poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, conflict and injustice. By engaging in service learning opportunities, learners will cultivate values and attitudes to help others, recognise the shared benefits of active participation, and understand the short-term and long-term impacts of any intervention. Service focuses on service for others and for our planet, and embraces interculturalism and internationalism, promoting the importance of respect when working together within our immediate community and the increasing dependence on cultural exchange when living and working internationally.
Service enables us to:
Participate actively and make meaningful contributions as informed, responsive and responsible citizens to tackle environmental, economic and social challenges at a local, national and global level
Develop attitudes of care and empathy for others and the environment through identifying the short-term and long-term needs of communities and habitats
Have an enhanced understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and recognise the importance of tending to the future of the planet, protecting and preserving threatened habitats and creating sustainable solutions
Identify global governance structures, rights and responsibilities, and the interconnectedness and interdependencies of different countries and populations
Recognise and appreciate differences within: culture, language, religion, gender and our common humanity; and develop effective skills for living in an increasingly diverse world
Develop values of fairness and social justice, and be able to critically analyse inequalities based on gender, socio-economic status, culture, religion, age and other diversities
Appreciate that intercultural education aims to go beyond passive coexistence, to achieve a developing and sustainable way of living together in a multicultural society through the understanding of, respect for and dialogue between the different cultural groups
Understand that internationalism is a global mindset that may be defined as: a worldview in which one sees oneself as connected to the world community and feels a sense of responsibility for its members
