Hello Timberwolves!

About Your Teacher:

My name is Kristen Shepard and I am so excited to be your child’s Music teacher!   This year begins my 15th year of teaching, and 4th with LISD.  I’m just as excited now as I was when I first started my career in education.  

The University of Oklahoma is my alma mater, and I’m a big Sooner fan.  Some of my favorite things are spending time with my family, traveling, and singing with the Dallas Symphony Chorus.

All students will receive a music certificate and those who received a medal will also receive a rating certificate .

You should be so proud of yourselves!!  So glad you participated and I hope you enjoyed learning about these 12 composers.  All awards will be given out at the grade level ceremonies in May.  If you will not be present at your grade level ceremony, please let me know and I will present your awards in class and take your picture then.

We want to acknowledge you in front of your peers and celebrate you so all can share in your success!

All grades learned about the composer, Aaron Copland last week.

5th Grade

Review of Treble and Bass Clefs, music alphabet, solfege and recorders.

3rd Grade 

Some classes finishing "The Magic Flute Opera" and others beginning a review of folk dancing and 4 corners games.

4th Grade

Students will be learning their state song - "Texas Our Texas" and reviewing form along with parachute activities.

K-2 Grades

Learning about form in music and doing parachute activities.

CONGRATULATIONS TO Kindergarten for a WONDERFUL  program entitled "Our Favorite Songs" on March 27, 2024 at 6:30pm in the gym.  CALL TIME is 6:00pm in the music room.  THESE KIDS ARE AMAZING!   We had trouble with the sound system going off and on=, but it didn't bother them!  They sang the majority of their program a cappella and it was great!  So proud of them!  Pictures attached.

MARCH MUSIC MADNESS  - The Winner for the School is Walk the Dinosaur by Queen Latifah!

PARENTS - PLEASE REVIEW THE LOG ON INFORMATION FOR CANVAS.  ALL grades have a canvas course and songs for the musicals are in canvas - wirh and without voices (accompaniment) for them to practice at home.  The sheet music is also included so you may print or review at home.  The students need to memorize the words.

Donations are greatly appreciated as we are often in need of different supplies throughout the year.  There are some books listed that would benefit our music classes as well.  Scholastic has some books, but not a lot that specifically address music and composers.

Parents - If you play piano and have experience accompanying groups or play other instruments please let me know.  There may be a volunteer opportunity for you!

It has been a fantastic year of making music with you!  ALL students and parents should check the Hicks Elementary website, Enrichment, Music on a weekly basis to see updates for music class and after school music activities such as Choir Ukulele Club, FMLM, etc.  ALL students and parents should also look in the music course for their grade level on a daily/weekly basis to stay current with assignments and  current learning goals.  Instructions are listed below on how to access your child's canvas music course.  This is very important in order to stay caught up and current in music class.

To access your child's canvas course from the LISD website from at home computer: Go to LISD, L-Hub, enter login and password.  Each course is labeled by grade - Music 1, Music 2, etc.

Click on the grade's course.  Once in the course, click on Modules, My Resources.  Under the My Resources tab is where your student has access to study materials, such as songs we are learning. 

ALL students will need to remember their login and password information in order to log into canvas.  I am only able to show them how to navigate my course or other apps once they are logged into their accounts.

The 4th and 5th graders take their ipads home so should be able to login on their own.  They have been shown, but they will need their login and password to access my courses.  3rd grade  has been shown as well, but don't take home their ipads.  As always, they should log on to canvas with adult supervision.  K-2 can log in as well with a parent and these instructions.  All grades have been shown how to access Canvas Music Course.

Students should be logging into their Music Canvas Course and using resources available to them.    Students should also be logging into Quaver music curriculum and checking out all the wonderful resources under Student Dashboard.

All grade levels (K-5) have a Music Course in Canvas and access to Quaver.

All should be able to be accessed at home on a home computer, as long as the student knows their login and password.  I am told this is through classlink and is their i-station username and password.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED IN HICKS AROUND THE WORLD NIGHT!  THE BOOTHS WERE WONDERFUL AND IT WAS SO NICE HEARING ABOUT EVERYONE'S CULTURES AND SAMPLING FOOD!
