Year 1
Directions & Positions - As the children begin to learn positions like left, right, over, under and more, they attempted to guide each other using the correct positional language around areas of the outside.
It allowed children to see what happens if they get it wrong and how to correct the instructions to get their friend to go the correct way.
Evergreen and Deciduous Trees - As the children learnt about evergreen and deciduous trees in science, we used the school grounds to investigate how many of each type of tree we have at St Helen’s.
Filled with the Holy Spirit - As year 1 developed an understanding of the timeline of Jesus after the crucifixion, they learnt about Jesus ascending up to heaven and the Holy Spirit coming down upon us.
They linked this to the trinity in the Glory Be and also how it is within us to spread good news.
As the children wore their Holy Spirit hats, they spread good news amongst each other.
Finding Quarters - To identify quarters, the year 1 children recognised 4 parts and how an amount is halved and halved again into those 4 parts.
They were then able to write a quarter of an amount into their maths books.
Halves - Sharing Between Two - Developing the concept of halves, the year 1 children used our snack time fruits to cut and share fruits in half.
This linked to the DT unit Fruit Kebabs as we explored the skills required to cut fruit for the kebabs we will make.
Road Safety - As part of The Year 1 PSHCE unit of road safety, the children used the small road outside St Helen’s to learn the rules of crossing safely. We discussed what the children should be aware of when approaching the road and the rules of a Zebra Crossing.
The children then recalled the rules into their books showing a secure understanding.
Sharing Whole Amounts Equally - To begin understanding the concept of division, year 1 took whole amounts and looked at how we can separate that amount into groups equally and what happens if there are some left over. The children could recognise this with the term remainder.
Taste Testing & Planning - As year 1 prepare for making their fruit kebabs, to help plan what they wanted to put onto the kebab, the children used their sense to try fruits and decide if it should go onto our shopping list.
May the Month of Mary - At the beginning of May, the whole school took part in the crowning of Mary. Year 1 took the opportunity to pray to Mary in their class assembly as week later. We reminded KS1 why Mary was so special.
Year 2
Fruits of the Holy Spirit - Year 2 have been learning about the different fruits of the spirit. We thought carefully about which fruits we could see in each other and created certificates for each other based on this. The fruits of the spirit are, kindness, gentleness, generosity, joy, self-control, peace, love, patience and faithfulness.
Making Puppets - Year 2 have been practising our sewing skills and used needles and threads to make our own puppets.
Flip Books - As part of our computing unit, animation, we created flip books to demonstrate how continuous imagery create the illusion of movement.
