Year 5
For Citizenship week, year 5 participated in an interschool debate against St Joachims discussing the question; do Catholic Values and British Values always work together. In class the year 5’s prepped their speeches in groups and learned essential skills to debating such as rebuttals and being able to question points the other team has brought up. During the debate the year 5’s learned how important prep work is and how to keep the debate on topic. They did a very good job and won their debate.
As well as the debate the Year 5’s also wrote letters to Keir Starmer on how England can help with the current Refugee crisis. They used their formal language skills that they used in their debate speeches and came up with some great points on how we as a country can help the less fortunate.
We have also been learning about Hinduism as part of our PSCHE learning and made origami diya lamps and drew connections between the 2 religions.
History Presentation - The Year 5’s have been researching about Henry VIII and his six wives as part of their History learning. They used teamwork and communication skills to plan, prepare and present their slides on their learning.
During our religion topic the year 5’s have been learning about the Beatitudes and how we can live out Jesus’ greatest commandment. They used role play to show the parable of the good samaritan with a modern twist so they could see what they can do in everyday life to follow Jesus’ greatest commandment.
Year 6
In our Maths lessons during Citizenship Weeks, we have been planning fundraising events. We have thought about budgets needed to host an event and working out what to charge in order to make a profit for charity. In groups, we discussed ideas and pitched them to the rest of the class to vote on.
Gangs workshop - Year 6 recently took part in two workshops with GAV (Growing Against Violence). The first looked at how to stay safe when using social media and the potential dangers of making poor choices online. The second, looked at how to keep safe on the streets and the risks of talking to, and taking gifts from strangers. The children found the workshops very engaging and insightful.
Inter-school Debate with St Joachim's - Year 6 have been working hard to prepare their arguments and speeches for our annual inter school debate with St Joachim's School. This year our motion was "Catholic values and British values always work together." and we were arguing for the motion. The children carried out their own research and prepared amazing arguments in preparation. They used their oracy skills to present their arguments eloquently.
