Year 1
It is one of our favourite times of the year, when Miss Morgan sets up the campfire and we get to melt marshmallows.
We can count to 20 but we have been learning what 20 looks like. We learnt the concept of 20 being 2 tens.
Using different manipulatives we each made 20 and presented our quantities to each other showing the patterns we had used.
Our teachers gave us blank number lines. We learnt what estimating was and used this to make an educated guess as to where the numbers 11-20 belong. Once we made a big version, we then used rulers to draw number lines in our books. Our teachers challenged us to estimate where certain number might belong using an arrow to show it.
St Helen’s and St Joachim’s KS1 Swap Day - The Year 1 children of St Helen’s went to St Joachim’s.
As part of both schools' citizenship focus, the KS1 children have been learning about the British Value ‘The Rule of Law’. The children have linked this to the value of our schools - Living in Harmony. They have discussed how we do this at St Helen’s and how we do this at St Joachim’s. The Year 1 children wrote letters to each other explaining how we live this value in our schools.
They met on 14th January 2024. St Helen’s year 1 children spent the day at St Joachim’s working with the year 1 children there. We made many new friends and worked with many teachers from both schools. We modelled and acted out how to live in harmony with activities such as helping hands, friendship paper chains, a kindness song, playing together and building bridges. We also enjoyed a story about living in harmony.
The children enjoyed working in a new school with new friends and living out the value they have learnt about in class. Before the end of the day, the children exchanged letters.
Year 2
2B visited the library where we listened to a story about monsters who wanted to eat 10 teachers! But by the time they got to the final nursery teacher, her strict voice and lessons about manners taught those grizzly monsters a lesson! We then enjoyed looking around the library for books we might be interested in.
In RE, we have been learning about the symbol of water and why it is so important in the Catholic faith. We know that water cleanses our bodies, the same way God cleanses our spirits from wrongdoing. We said our own prayers then blessed each other with Holy water that we keep on our RE table.
As part of our Citizenship Weeks; Year 2 hosted a swap day for our friends at St. Joachim’s. We had many activities prepared such as; creating music with boom whackers, listening to stories about friendship and British Values, playing team building games and dancing altogether. It was a lot of fun and we made lots of new friends. A special thanks to the Year 5’s who helped us to host the event!
