Year 1
Year 1 learnt about the famous artist Picasso and studied his art. Picasso created abstract portraits. Year 1 took this concept. Attached you can see our very close up photos. We took these portraits and cut them into abstract shapes to then create a self portrait on a bright coloured painted background. The creativity of the year 1 children was amazing.
We have been working hard in Music to stay in time and keep rhythm.
Year 2
In this engaging DT unit, children explored and investigated wheeled products to develop an understanding of how wheels and axles work. They asked and answered questions such as "How do you think the wheels move?" and "Why do you think this product has that number of wheels?" to support their observations and deepen their thinking.
Pupils learned to distinguish between fixed and freely moving axles and axle holders. They experimented with different ways to attach axles and investigated how this affected movement. They also drew and labelled wheeled products, identifying parts such as the body, chassis, wheels, axles, and axle holders, and considered the intended user and purpose of each product.
Using their initial investigations, children generated simple design criteria and selected appropriate materials—such as card, wood, and plastic—based on their characteristics. They designed and made their own wheeled product and evaluated their ideas and final outcomes against the original criteria.
This unit encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and hands-on problem-solving through purposeful and practical learning. They made some fantastic moving vehicles!
In class, we’ve been learning about the lives of explorers like Christopher Columbus, Neil Armstrong, and Ina Battau. From sailing across the ocean in the 1490s to walking on the Moon in the 1960s, these explorers showed great courage in facing the unknown. We’ve used role play, outdoor exploration, and discussions to compare what it was like to be an explorer in the past versus more modern times. We’ve also looked at how tools, music and technology have changed and how the spirit of exploration has stayed the same.
In science, we have been learning about habitats. We did some research and went on a mini-beast hunt to find the different types of animals we find in different areas. We found more ants in dryer areas, and snails and slugs in the damper areas.
