Year 5
Separating materials in Science
In our new science topic year 5 has been exploring different methods to separate mixtures through a number of different experiments during our lessons. One way that we explored separating mixtures was through sieving a flour and pasta mixture and understanding that the smaller particles would go through the sieve and the biggest ones remain on top. Also we were able to experiment with what materials could dissolve in water.
Peer reading
During this month we were lucky enough as part of our character and setting focus week to go and participate in peer reading with year 2. We were able to read to and alongside the year 2 students and share our love of reading with them. It was very interesting to see what books the year 2’s enjoyed to read and ask them pots of different questions about these books. Some of us were also able to share our picture books we made at the start of the year and were very excited to read these to the year 2’s as well.
Prayer and Liturgy
During our Prayer and Liturgy this month year 5 have been focusing on how they can lead our sessions and understanding the importance of different feast days that we would’ve celebrated in Mass. We took our time to look
Year 6
In our Computing lessons, Year 6 have been learning about Artificial Intelligence (AI), its uses and how AI uses training data and machine learning to make accurate predictions. In our lessons, the children have been training chatbots and AI programs. In this lesson, children were training the AI machine to recognise images of fish and underwater creatures. We looked at how our human bias can impact how accurate AI’s predictions might be.
In year 6, children have been learning about mountains and volcanoes in their Geography lessons. As part of their learning, the children used the Now Press Play headphones for an immersive experience that consolidated their knowledge of volcanoes. The experience took them back in time to Pompeii and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Children have been learning about women in salvation history. They have been sharing their ideas about the importance of women like Hannah, Sarah and Mary and how they can be seen as protagonists. In this lesson they were becoming more confident at independently finding different books and verses in the bible.
Year 6 visited the Natural History Museum. They took part in a volcanoes workshop where they helped to replicate a volcanic eruption.
The children also took part in an evolution workshop where they learned all about the process of natural selection and enjoyed exploring the wonderful exhibits in the museum.
