Year 1
For computing year 1 are learning what algorithms are. We used a story about an elf. She had an algorithm to help Santa get ready for Christmas. This allowed the children to understand the link between algorithms and instructions. We linked this to a computer. The computer remembers the instructions it is given.
We filmed the elf’s algorithm adding actions to help us remember.
Year 1 are learning about levers in Design Technology. Using the key words, fulcrum and lever, the children used a cup, straw and tape to make a lever which can go up and down.
As the year 1 children master the concept of addition, we explored how we make whole numbers if 1 part is missing. We are fluent with this for number bonds to 10 but this time we challenged ourselves by making the whole numbers of 6 or 8. This will help us to develop fluency in subtraction and identify fact families.
Using number lines the year 1 children solved problems and arithmetic style questions.
The children developed the skills of jumping to add or subtract. They can recognise that when they add the number gets bigger and when they subtract the number gets smaller.
The year 1 children took part in the peer reading event. Year 6 and Year 1 buddy up to read to each other. The year 6 children were so excited to hear their buddies read as the skill develops and we become fluent readers.
Throughout the month of November; the children’s prayer times have been for the angels in heaven as they have learnt this month is for all saints and all souls.
As the children identified the significance of the poppy, they could then give intentions for the soldiers who have died or are fighting in wars during prayer times.
The poppies workshop allowed the children to learn where these intentions are coming from with some knowledge of WWI. The children enjoyed meeting a poet.
Year 2
In year 2 we are learning how to use algorithms to input onto programmes. To practise giving instructions, we first created dances using simple moves and worked together to follow the instructions.
Year 2 practised reading to our peer reading buddies in year 5. They also shared some books with us!
