Year 1
Earth Day/Geography Focus
Our geography focus is RUBBISH!
We have completed 2 rubbish hunts. One in school and one in our local park.
We have sorted the rubbish and put our findings into pictograms.
We will be reporting our findings to Miss Doherty.
PE focus
Physical exercise is good for our bodies and our minds. So we took Mrs Cook’s dog Chip to the park for a walk. This allowed us to have a short period of movement, improving our mood but it was also good for us and Chip.
Plants
Year 1 have explored the school grounds discovering what plants we have growing in our very own school. We also looked at the trees. We wanted to know which leaves were evergreen and which ones were deciduous. Evergreen means that they are thin and spiky and never fall off the tree. Deciduous means their leaves are wide and large and will fall from the tree in the autumn season.
Poetry Recital
Year 1 studied a classic poem called A Good Play.
We learnt the poem to recite but we also learnt the meaning of the poem. The poem was about 2 children playing in an imaginary boat. To help our recital we built our own boat to play in during the day and help use our imaginations. This helped us to interpret the poem.
Road safety
Year 1’s focus for the health and safety theme of PSHCE is road safety.
1Y went for a walk and spoke about how to cross the roads safely, putting the points into action.
This helped us to write rules when we returned.
The Ascension & Pentecost - To The Ends of the Earth.
As we returned to school after Easter, we now continue the learning in Religion, studying the scripture stories of what happened after Jesus rose on Easter Sunday. We have learnt that Jesus returned to his disciples and Mary telling them their mission of spreading the Good News. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to enable them to complete this mission. We enjoyed thinking about the news we would spread.
Year 2
Classifying
In Science we have been learning about living things. We sorted items into three categories: alive, once alive and never alive. We explored plants around St Helen's and explored the variety of plants that the school has all around
Design Technology
For our DT Focus week we created protective clothing for Humpty Dumpty. We used many materials such as bubble wrap, sponges, felt, elastic bands and lollipop sticks to protect Humpty Dumpty. We tested our prototypes by throwing them off the balcony and seeing which groups of eggs survived the drop.
Flip Books
In Computing this term we are learning about animations. We made our own flip books to demonstrate how animations are made from one movement per frame. This helped us to understand how we will create our own animations.
Fruits of the Spirit
In Religion, Year 2 have been learning about the Holy Spirit and fruits of the Holy Spirit. Children matched up examples of the fruit of the Holy Spirit to the labels and described which fruit they felt they were most like.
Local Litter
During the Geography Focus week we collected data on litter in our local area. We split up into groups of ten and visited roads around the school. This included Sussex Road, Falcon Street, Hermit Road Park, Chargeable Lane, Phillip Street and Barking Road. We found lots of litter around the area and recorded it. We used our data to create a pictogram and write a report on our data.
Puppets
This term in DT we will be making puppets. We first explored different kinds of puppets such as a hand puppet, finger puppet, Marionette puppets and shadow puppets. We then made our own paper finger puppets to play with. Then in the next lesson we explored different ways to join materials together. We tried joining our fabrics in various ways such as pinning, glueing, sewing, taping and stapling. It was so fun trying the various methods. We are so excited to soon try and see our own puppets.
Religion Art Work
In Religion we took inspiration from ‘Taiźe’ by Marlene Scholtz and created our own versions of the Holy Trinity using Oil Pastels. Some of us included an open hand, a dove and wind.
Tying Shoe Laces
In PSHCE, we have been learning about staying safe. This includes making sure our shoelaces are tied. We practised how to tie shoe laces and some taught their friends.
